Altar Guild
The Altar Guild is a group of volunteers who prepares the altar for worship services.
Flower Guild
The Flower Guild is a group of volunteers who creates and provides flower arrangements for the altar every week.
Communion Bread Bakers
This group of volunteers rotates baking a special honey whole wheat communion bread recipe. St. John's belongs to the Honoré Farm and Mill CSA (community supported agriculture) which grows and sources heirloom flour. Honoré's work invests in soil health, improves water quality, and increases carbon drawdown while supporting skilled jobs on the farm and at the mill.
Readers, Cup Bearers, Crucifers
This group of volunteers supports our clergy during our worship services.
Greeters, Ushers, and Welcoming Committee for Newcomers (AKA Invitation and Inclusion)
This group of volunteers welcomes visitors and parishioners at Sunday services, hands out bulletins, helps people get seated, and provides information to newcomers. Greeters offer potential new members the opportunity to sign the registration book, and the welcoming committee follows up with a gift of fresh bread along with a welcome note. The committee is dedicated to promoting St. John’s mission to invite and include all members of the community, whether new or old, and make everybody feel welcome through openness and hospitality.
In further support of that mission, the committee hosts a Coffee Klatch with donut holes in September for Thornhill parents who drop off their students in the St. John’s parking lot, and a Newcomers Luncheon in November to offer a warm reception into the St. John’s community.
The Invitation and Inclusion Committee meets the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Hospitality (AKA Java Corps)
Volunteers host coffee hour after all Sunday services, which is an easy and fun way to meet and socialize with fellow parishioners. Individuals can sign up online and St. John’s groups are assigned “ownership” once or twice per year, providing an opportunity for the group to educate the parish about their activities or ministries.

Rector’s Pastoral Care & Prayer Team
This group provides support for members in our community who are facing health challenges. The team includes clergy and parishioners, who coordinate care and offer prayer. The team keeps the Casserole Brigade informed about those who could use a helping hand with food, makes sure that those who need home communion are served, keeps the Ride Ministry informed about transportation needs, and stays in touch with those who are not able to come to church. If you know of someone who might benefit from this ministry, let the clergy or any of the Pastoral Care & Prayer team members know.
Contact: Scott Denman ([email protected] or 510-501-8845)
Casserole Brigade
The Casserole Brigade is a group of volunteers who deliver a simple, nutritious meal to St. John’s families in times of need. The brigade offers its services to parishioners when there is a birth, accident, surgery, illness, death, or other emergency. Oftentimes, people in need do not request help. If you know of someone who might benefit from this ministry, let the clergy or Casserole Brigade team know.
Carpool/Ride Ministry
This group of volunteers coordinates and drives parishioners who are unable to provide their own transportation to and from St. John’s Sunday services and events. Carpooling also helps reduce our carbon footprint and the volunteers can help connect you with a driving companion in your neighborhood.
