Through the capital campaign we will:
  1. Establish a two-way driveway from Thornhill Drive, bridging Temescal Creek and continuing up a roundabout with a drop-off zone at hte southwest end of the church.
  2. Create a new parking area and level sidewalks.
  3. Eliminate the treacherous entrance off Gouldin Road while also minimizing the need to use the steep exit onto Alhambra Lane along Thornhill Elementary School. The Gouldin Road entrance will be permanently closed and the new main drive will be greatly preferable to Alhambra Lane.
  4. Ensure property development and landscaping are environmentally sensitive and enhance our natural setting.
  5. Improve security and lighting.

News & Updates

THE GATEWAY PROJECT WILL IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY

St. John’s is blessed with a beautiful campus which has a treacherously steep entrance and exit, making our campus less accessible, hospitable, and safe for parishioners and the broader community. The Gateway Project addresses these long-held concerns. Read more.
ST. JOHN’S VOLUNTEERS COMPLETE TEMESCAL CREEK PROJECT
December 1, 2023

Temescal Creek, that tiny creek running mostly underground parallel to Thornhill Drive, opens to daylight between Alhambra Lane and Gouldin Road. At the peak of the rainy season, it has been known to have between twelve and fifteen inches of water flowing past St. John’s property. Read more.
THE GATEWAY PROJECT WILL INCREASE PARKING AT ST. JOHN’S

November 24, 2023

You may have wondered how The Gateway Project will impact parking at St. John’s. Will the impact be a net positive, or will we lose parking spaces? How many accessible parking spaces will there be, and where will they be located? Bob Davidson created the graphic here that shows the layout and numbers of our future parking spaces compared to what we have now. This information is posted at church on the wall in the back hall by the kitchen. Check it out: Read more.

let us pray

Gracious God, we give you thanks for the faith and vision of St. John's founders who saw the need for an Episcopal presence in the Oakland hills and established St. John's on this site of natural beauty 70 years ago.

We give you thanks also for the successive generations' faithful service to our church and the broader Oakland community and for their careful stewardship of all you entrusted to them.

As we seek to bring to fruition plans that we began creating 25 years ago, we turn to you for wisdom, guidance, grace and courage.

We ask your blessing on our efforts to continue the work of those who came before us, to fulfill the vision of our founders by opening up our church campus to the broader Oakland community and extending a visible invitation and welcoming presence to all who pass by St. John's.

We pray that your Spirit will guide us to right and proper use of the abundant gifts you have bestowed on us.

We ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ who with you and the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts now and always. Amen.
