Music
St.
John’s has an active music program, led by talented musician Ernest
Fredric Knell and blessed with excellent soloists.
The Chancel Choir sings at the 10:45AM Sunday Eucharist.
St.
John’s has long been known for its high standards of musicality and
its strong congregational participation. We keep alive a tradition of beauty and grandeur harder and harder to find
in our secular world. Both the 1982 Hymnal and a new church hymnal, Wonder, Love and
Praise, are used in our worship.
Special
programs have included Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice
in the Lamb and Ceremony of Carols, Mendelsohn's Elijah,
and masses by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Charpentier. African
music and Dixieland jazz feature from time to time
(yes, we rock.)
The
Chancel
Choir rehearses Sunday mornings (9 AM) and on the first Saturday of
the month (also at 9 AM), with additional rehearsals prior to special
services. All are welcome, but music sight-reading
is expected and needed.
