Opportunities: Orphans in Uganda
Rachael Kanyuma is 13 years old. Her father died about five years ago and her mother died six months ago. Her eyes fill with tears as she tells about her mother's death. She now lives with a very old grandmother, who has lost all six of her children to AIDS. This lady is old and weak and kind neighbors have been giving them some food. Many times Rachael goes to bed with no supper. They live in one small room in a falling down mud house. Rachael finished her primary level and wants more than anything in the world to continue school. If possible Carol would love to put her in a boarding school. They least expensive one in the area costs $333 a year. Caroline Kabahuma is 15 years old and lost her parents to AIDS three years ago. She now lives with her brother and sister in a very old, leaking mud house that may fall down soon. They struggle for the bare necessities of life. She did poorly on her first term of S2 but she told Carol that they can't afford kerosene, and she is cooking until dark and has no way to study. She walks about five miles each way every day to school. Carol asked her if she was serious about learning and going to school; she broke down crying and said it is just so hard, but she wants more than anything to continue. She had a sponsor last year from Michigan ,but that it was a one-time donation. She needs financial help but if anyone felt that they would like to write to her, she is also in much need of emotional support. How to sponsor Rachael or Caroline: Pledge $35 a month for a year at a time. Sign up by emailing Karen Gleason or calling her at (925)376-0519.
